The end of the school year, with graduation parties scheduled, college plans underway and report cards hitting mailboxes, has many people wondering about grades and what’s next. For students and families in competency-based environments, those questions often center around the differences in grading, assessment and school transcripts. For teachers and school district leaders, it’s important to be able to answer common questions like:
- Where are the percentages on a transcript? Where are the As, Bs, Cs and Ds I had on my own transcript?
- Will colleges be able to make sense of a transcript that doesn’t include traditional grades or GPA information?
- Will a transcript from a competency-based environment negatively impact a student’s chances at getting into college?
These are all great questions. They show that the student and their family are invested in what’s next. How you answer their questions is an opportunity to show them that you are equally invested.
A transcript from a personalized, competency-based system does look different. But that difference has the potential to be not only a truly accurate reflection of what a student knows, but also makes learning transparent to all stakeholders – including families and future college admissions officers.

Transparency is an essential part of competency-based learning. You can never communicate too much. Everyone in a competency-based system, from teachers and students to parents and community members, should be able to explain what students are learning, how and why.
