Healing the Equity Divide: A Way Forward on Assessment and Accountability for Equity Oriented Educators (Workshop)
Friday May 7, 2021 11:10am – 12:40pm PDT
- Julianna Charles Brown, Director of Systems Transformation, KnowlegeWorks
- Doannie Tran, Liberatory Co-Creation Partner, Center for Innovation in Education
The movement around standards-based accountability is at an inflection point. After 30 years, the achievement gaps that the movement was meant to address persist with little change. At the same time, the current state and federal approaches to assessment and accountability seem as ensconced in the educational infrastructure as they ever have been yet stakeholders in the field feel increasingly disconnected from these approaches.
The path forward must bridge the divide between two equity-seeking perspectives; those who see the current approach as harmful to those it was intended to serve and those who fear dismantling the current system, seen as the only mechanism for ensuring underserved students get the supports they need, without a viable replacement. In this session, we will center on what is common – our goal that every child has what they need to thrive. We must look to create a new way forward that acknowledges the wisdom and expertise of all who arrive at this conversation with the goal of educational equity in their hearts.
