Supporting STEM with Business Partners: Marysville, Ohio

Marysville STEM Early College High School, Ohio’s first manufacturing-related STEM early college high school, opened its doors to students in the fall of 2014, but work on the school started much earlier. KnowledgeWorks team members helped in the planning sessions for the school, which involved staff from school partners, Honda and Columbus State Community College, so the school’s curriculum reflects real-world employer needs. Other community partners with Marysville STEM Early College High School include the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center, the Union County Chamber of Commerce and Otterbein University.

It was critical for these community partners to be involved from the beginning to meet the economic needs of the community. For instance, local employer Honda knows that there is a demand for skilled employees in advanced manufacturing. By partnering with school leadership, they are laying the groundwork for a pipeline of future employees. Honda has worked with the school to select lab equipment, lay out the space, select an instructor and develop the curriculum for the manufacturing pathway. Honda technicians and engineers are also creating opportunities for the students to learn about these exciting manufacturing careers through tours and know-how sharing.

Active collaboration between school leadership and business and community partners are critical for the success of a KnowledgeWorks early college high school but also for the future economic success of the community.
