Dr. Sherrill Cleland is President Emeritus of Marietta College and an education and economic consultant. Dr. Cleland's distinguished career as an innovator and leader in higher education initiatives in the United States and abroad spans more than forty years. He served as President of Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, for more than fifteen years and was also a Professor of Economics at the College during that period.

Prior to his tenure at Marietta, Dr. Cleland held various positions at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, including Vice President & Dean of Academic Affairs and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Economics and Business. While at Kalamazoo College, Dr. Cleland was a project specialist and consultant to the Ford Foundation, establishing an interdisciplinary graduate program in the field of Development Administration at the American University in Beirut. His work with the Foundation also included service as an Economic Advisor to the Haserite Kingdom of Jordan and the production of a Seven-Year Development Plan for Jordan.

In the early part of his career, Dr. Cleland held teaching posts at Princeton University and the University of Richmond. He holds a B.A. from Oberlin College, an M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University, an Honorary Degree in Finance and Economics from Sichuan University, Chengdu, China, and a Doctor of Laws from Marietta College.

A partial list of his professional activities follows: Former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Student Loan Funding Corporation; Member, Board of Directors, AMIDEAST, Washington, D.C.; Member, Board of Trustees, Tuition Exchange Inc.; Former member Board of Trustees, Oberlin College and Mount Vernon College; Past Chairman, Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (Ohio); Past President, Ohio College Association and East Central Colleges Consortium; Former Secretary, Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges; and former Member, Board of Directors, Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank, Cincinnati Branch. His many professional associations include: The American Economic Association; American Association for the Advancement of Science; and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
