Creating Conditions for Change

At KnowledgeWorks, we’re taking on a powerful adversary: the status quo. We know that education systems with years of tradition and embedded bureaucracy behind them won’t be easy to change. And we understand that change can’t be accomplished through piecemeal solutions.

The demands facing us require fundamental shifts in the very foundation of how education does business. We must change the way we think about learning – we have to question all our assumptions about what schools look like and what roles educators play.

KnowledgeWorks is helping change our mental model for what education should be. Our Organizational Learning and Innovation group combines insight into future trends with expertise in organizational learning and systems change to help organizations and identify road maps forward.

Making change possible
Before real progress can be achieved, we must cultivate the conditions under which change can flourish. Our research into how systems evolve teaches us that enabling education innovation requires us to:

  • Stretch our imaginations to consider new possibilities.
  • Suspend our current thinking to make room for a future that breaks free from the past.
  • Embrace ownership so that every person acts out of the personal conviction that he or she can make a difference.
  • Build community to sustain and broaden the impact of individual efforts.
  • Create a shared vision that draws on the community’s collective wisdom to infuse the work with meaning and focus.
  • Act together so that our efforts are coordinated and effective.
