Our Work

For more than a decade, KnowledgeWorks has been deeply involved in developing and implementing approaches to high school education that prepare students for tomorrow’s challenges, teaching them to create, adapt and solve problems.

Our understanding of the future of education, coupled with an underlying belief in the potential of every learner, compels us to make sure the promise of the future reaches every student.

Transforming America’s high schools is important and powerful work. But we can’t focus on high schools alone. Isolated pockets of change can’t survive – and can’t do what needs to be done.That’s why we act as a catalyst for national transformation, building the capacity for change within communities and states, and creating conditions that allow innovation to survive and to spread.

We think about our work in three related parts:

Creating conditions for change
Before real progress can be achieved, we must cultivate the conditions under which change can flourish. We know that an education system with years of tradition and embedded bureaucracy behind it won’t be easy to change. We must fundamentally change the way we think about learning – we have to question all our assumptions about what schools look like and what roles educators play. Through our 2020 Forecast: Creating the Future of Learning, we are helping create a vision for what that future could look like and the tools to help make it a reality. Read more >>

Leading high school innovation
Our ideas about the future of education are big. Big enough that they can feel overwhelming. But we firmly believe you have to roll up your sleeves and get busy. We have chosen to start innovating in high schools, bringing the future we see in our 2020 Forecast to students around the country. Read more >>

Scaling and sustaining innovation
We won’t rest until the future of education reaches every student. In order for that to happen, we must develop public policies and nurture partnerships across education and social systems to ensure comprehensive and lasting change. Rather than being content to create isolated pockets of change, we know we must build systems that can sustain these new learning environments. We have begun work in 26 states across the country.
